  • Database Server Issue

Our engineers are actively investigating an issue with one of our primary database servers. This appears to be causing timeouts for both the API and web application, and likely resulted in slower-than-normal SMTP connections. We've identified the issue, and are working to restore full functionality. Most processes should now be working as expected, but we'll continue to monitor for stability.
10:42 PM UTF Systems Operational: The database server is operational, and sending speeds are returning to normal levels. We'll continue to monitor for stability and consistency for connections and sending speeds.
10:53 PM UTF Our engineers determined that an ad-hoc reporting query being run to check on the status of other operations was the proximate cause of the earlier timeouts and delays. We'll be investigating additional measures that may be necessary to help prevent this type of issue going forward.

  • Delivery Delays

Starting at 9:45AM UTC, one of our MTAs suffered an unusual catastrophic failure that caused all mail routed to that server to be backed up. This issue cascaded to cause delays with a small percentage of other mail.
11:49 AM UTF We have isolated the failing MTA and messages are beginning to send again.
01:00 PM UTF Engineers are still working on fixing the issue with the failing MTA. All traffic is being diverted to other servers and IPs. Some dedicated IP users will see their email delivered over shared IPs while we resolve this issue.
07:55 PM UTF A small amount of mail remained on the impacted server and has been completely processed. In conjunction with our vendor, we have identified the root cause of the failure, and have made code changes on our end to mitigate the issue going forward. All sending on the impacted MTA has resumed and is proceeding normally. We will continue to monitor for stability.

Engineers are investigating delays in non-sending processes. Inbound, webhooks, API logging, and content logging (view content links) may be delayed but no messages will be lost. Outbound mail is sending normally.
03:13 PM UTF Engineers have determined that increased load on some application servers resulted in longer-than-normal processing for non-sending jobs (webhooks, inbound, and content logging in particular). Updates have been pushed to add additional capacity and clear out queued processes. The majority of the backlog has cleared, and we continue to monitor load while the queues continue to clear.
04:24 PM UTF Inbound, webhooks, and most API logging that were in the backlog have been processed and normal operations have resumed. Content of sent messages is still being processed and the backlogs are clearing.

  • US East Packet Loss

Our ELB instances in one availability zone in the AWS us-east datacenter suffered from packet loss from about 11:15 PM UTC until 11:45 PM UTC. Up to 25% of API requests that that region may have had issues connecting during that time. SMTP delivery was unaffected. See the AWS status page for details.
